Copper testing, explained plainly

If you ask a Bedlington breeder exactly one health question, make it this one. The breed is closely associated with an inherited copper storage disorder, and it is the rare case where a cheap cheek swab tells you something genuinely useful before you commit to a dog for the next fourteen years.

What the disease is

Healthy livers excrete surplus copper in bile. In affected Bedlingtons that clearance is impaired, so dietary copper accumulates in liver tissue over years. Enough accumulation damages the liver. It is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, which is the technical way of saying a dog needs two copies of the faulty version โ€” one from each parent โ€” to be affected, and that two apparently healthy parents can produce an affected puppy.

In most affected Bedlingtons the cause is a deletion in the COMMD1 gene (older papers call it MURR1). That is what the commercial DNA test looks for.

The three results, and what each one means

  • Clear โ€” two normal copies. The dog will not develop the COMMD1 form of the disease and cannot pass a faulty copy on.
  • Carrier โ€” one normal, one faulty. The dog itself is not expected to be affected, but half its puppies inherit the faulty copy on average. A carrier bred to a clear dog produces no affected puppies.
  • Affected โ€” two faulty copies. At risk of copper accumulation, and every one of its puppies inherits at least one faulty copy.

This is why "both parents tested clear" is a much stronger answer than "the puppies look fine". Under recessive inheritance, health you can see tells you very little about what a dog carries.

The caveat that matters

A clear DNA test lowers the risk considerably. It does not reduce it to zero.

Copper accumulation has been reported in Bedlingtons that do not carry the COMMD1 deletion, so the test cannot be read as a guarantee against liver disease in general โ€” only against that specific known variant. The definitive assessment of how much copper is actually in a liver is a biopsy with quantitative copper measurement, which is a veterinary decision and not something a puppy buyer arranges on a hunch.

Practically, that means the DNA result belongs in the same mental bucket as the rest of a breeder's paperwork: strong evidence, not a warranty.

What to actually ask

  • Have both parents been DNA tested for the COMMD1 variant, and can I see the certificates?
  • What were the results โ€” clear, carrier, or affected?
  • If either parent is a carrier, what was the other parent's result?
  • Has any dog in the line been diagnosed with liver disease, and at what age?

A breeder who welcomes these questions is the answer to several other questions you have not thought to ask yet. One who is vague about paperwork is also answering something.
